Quilting with Confidence: Ruler Work for Domestic Machines

Have you ever watched those perfectly stitched curves, straight lines, and flowing designs and thought…
“There is NO way I could do that on my machine…”

Oh yes, you can. And this class is where it begins.

Join us for a hands-on Ruler Work Workshop for Domestic Machines, where you’ll learn how to guide your quilting with precision, confidence, and just the right amount of “why didn’t I do this sooner?!”

Using the Westalee Design Starter Sampler Set, we’ll walk step-by-step through the foundational ruler techniques every domestic machine quilter needs to know. This is not a watch-and-hope class—you’ll be stitching, learning, and building muscle memory the entire time.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to safely and correctly use quilting rulers on a domestic machine
  • Proper setup with a ruler foot (this part matters more than people think!)
  • Stitching straight lines, arcs, and basic shapes with control
  • How to move from “wiggly and unsure” to “hey… that actually looks good!”
  • Tips to avoid common beginner frustrations (we’ve all been there…)

Why This Class Matters:

Ruler work opens up a whole new world of quilting possibilities—without needing a longarm. Once you understand the fundamentals, you’ll start seeing designs everywhere… borders, blocks, backgrounds… it’s like your brain flips a creative switch.

And here’s the best part:
This class is just the beginning.

We’ll continue building on these skills in future classes, so your investment in the Westalee Starter Sampler Set keeps working for you long after this first workshop.

What You’ll Need:

  • Westalee Design Starter Sampler Set
  • Ruler foot compatible with your sewing machine (low shank options available in-store)
  • Your domestic sewing machine
  • Basic sewing supplies

Don’t have the rulers or foot yet? No problem—we’ll have both available for purchase and can help you get set up correctly.

A Little From Us:

If you’ve ever felt like ruler work was intimidating or “not for you”… we’d love to prove you wrong in the best possible way.

Come learn, laugh, stitch, and maybe surprise yourself a little.

Required Supplies for Class

To get the most out of your hands-on ruler work experience, please bring the following:

  • Domestic sewing machine in good working order
  • Extension table (if you have one—highly recommended for stability)
  • Ruler foot compatible with your machine
  • Westalee Design Starter Sampler Set
  • Fat quarter quilt sandwiches (minimum of 2–3 recommended)
  • Thread for quilting (contrasting color strongly recommended so you can clearly see your stitches)
    • Each sandwich should include:
      • Quilt top
      • Batting
      • Backing
  • Pre-wound bobbins (at least 2–3 filled and ready to go)

A Quick Note:

Using a contrasting thread will help you see your stitching path as you learn—this makes a big difference in building confidence and improving quickly.
